Auto Insurance|Home Insurance|Quotes|Independent AgentThe other day I was speaking with a client who was under the impression that if he loaned his car (that's insured on his policy) to his brother, that his brother's policy would be the primary coverage if he (the brother) was in an accident.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.  I have personal experience with this scenario from a number of years ago.  My father-in-law backed a truck I owned into a car and no matter how much he wanted to have his insurance company pay for the damage it wasn't to be.  He did reimburse me for the deductible I had to pay to repair my car but I still had an At-Fault claim on my record.

So, my advice is to read your insurance policy carefully to know exactly who's covered, what's covered, and how it's covered because every policy is not the same.  The most important area to read in your policy is near the beginning and it's titled Definitions .

If you have questions, ask your agent.  He/She should know the policy that you've purchased and be able to explain your coverages in detail.  If you don't think you're getting the right answers then it's time to interview a new professional insurance agent, preferrably and independent agent.
